7A
Page 1

REPORT

To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
And the Redevelopment Agency Board
From the City Manager and the Executive Director

April 3, 2006

Subject
Wayfinding and Directional Signage Program

Recommendatio n
1. Adopt the recommendation of the Downtown Business Group to use the
"Skyline" logo and sign program details developed by Keng's Design for
the Downtown Wayfinding Program, and
Accept the non-exclusive royalty-free use of the logo from Keng's Design.

2.

Background
On February 27, 2006 the Council heard presentations from staff, Catalyst, Hellbent
Marketing, and Keng's Design on proposed options for the Downtown Wayfinding and
Directional Signage Program. The options included (1) a "black with silver halo" design
concept developed by Catalyst, (2) an "abstract colorburst" design concept developed by
Hellbent, and (3) a downtown "skyline" design concept developed by Keng's Design. After
extended discussion, the Council directed staff to make the same presentation to the
Downtown Business Group (DBG) and solicit their input on a preferred option.

The presentations were made to the DBG at their monthly meeting on March tho
Approximately 40 people attended the meeting. A "Downtown" Choices Summary
(Attachment 1) was developed by staff and attendees were asked to vote on their preferred
option. They were also asked to indicate their preferences for blade options related to the
choice of color for the parking and train statìon blades as well as the use of a black
background for the arrows (see Attachment 2).

The DBG overwhelmingly supported integration of the "skyline" logo developed by Keng in
the sign program, as well as the font, and parking blade colors proposed by Keng (see
Attachment 3, letter dated March 16lh from the DBG).

Analysis
Staff prefers the font and neutral colored (grey, black, white, or silver) blades for parking and
transit related destinations proposed by staff as part of the original sign program. Much study
went into those selections from a legibility perspective; and, there are some concerns
regarding the ability of motorists to readily distinguish the "blue" parking blades from the other
blade colors that will be used corresponding to districts. However, the desire to move forward
and get some signs installed by May 15th that will direct visitors to parking facilities is more
important than continuing to debate these details. It is time to move ahead with a selection.

1:2006 STAFF REPORTS AND AGREEMENTS_04-2000_Wayfinding and Directional Signage

--..--....-......--..u......--..... -...----. ---.-___---_--h"'___"""
