DESCRIPTION: (continued) Three brick steps lead up to the front door, which is set to the far right of the facade. The double -hung windows lighting the sides of the house are vertically proportioned, irregularly placed, and of varied sizes. Those on the left side of the house and at the rear are crowned with segmental arches. Another porch, with square columns and a shingled pent roof, gives access to the back door. 19. SIGNIFICANCE AND EVALUATION: (continued) The Finger Avenue neighborhood was made from what was originally the Finger Farm. The first deed for " 127" was given to "Frank M. Lorenz, Woodcarver, and wife, Emelie" in August 1910 by the Redwood City Realty Co. which was one of the companies that had purchased Wellesley Park in 1905 and had promised "to install utilities and construct streets." F. Lorenz was the owner until 1916. City Directories indicate that the Lorenz family never lived at 127 Finger. However, the house appears on the Assessors list in 1912 so it was built during their ownership. Frank Lorenz was a downtown merchant as "Lorenz and Trumbell Art Shop" was at 65 Broadway. Emelie, we have learned, was prominent in The Womens Club and was born in Germany. The next owner was "George D. Gates, retired" who came from San Francisco and was owner for the next eighteen years. At one time, others lived with him including a gardner. When he died, the house was vacant until it was purchased by Harry L. Heiberg in 1936. Harry Heiberg was a "floor contractor" and, besides laying floors in many Redwood City homes and buildings, he owned the bowling ally. In 1961, due to business reversals of Harry Heiberg, other owners came into possession of the property, and they, like the original owners, do not live in this unique, well-maintained, interesting house. 511
