6.H. - Page 5 of 15
teen programs throughout the City. These include programs at City facilities, such as the library branches,
community centers, on school campuses, and in parks and other settings. The City Council's Strategic
Initiative of "Community for all Ages" is reflective of the overall City's investment towards youth and teens
in our community.
Staff reviewed both the PRCS and Library budgets for youth and teen services, and analyzed data that is
compiled from online registration programs, the Library database, and other program survey information.
Notably, each department measures attendance and program offerings in a different manner. The Library
counts daily attendance, while PRCS counts individual users. Detailed Participant Attendance for FY 2017-
18 and FY 2018-19 is found in Attachment B.
In FY 2017-2018, PRCS had 10,091 unduplicated youth and teen participants in 52 programs directly
served by department staff. PRCS also had over 6,000 youth and teens enrolled in fee-based programs
contracted out to specialized providers. It is possible a participant could be a part of both city -staffed
programs and contract special interest programs.
The Library Department had 279,252 youth and teens participate in 7,467 programs. The Library programs
count each time each program occurs, which may lead to duplicated data if the same child attends more
than one program in any given day.
Currently, participant data is not shared between PRCS and Library staff, therefore, staff do not know the
extent to which individuals participate in programs offered by both departments.
The following pie chart shows the percentage of General Fund resources allocated towards youth versus
teen services, combined by both departments.
General Fund Resources Allocated for Youth and Teen Services
Tei
Programs
8%
Youth
Programs After School
46%
Programs
JK -8th)
Mid 1e36%
School
Sports
-als 10%
City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.org
169
