They anticipate that with this
additional sponsorship they can support the 25 acts currently booked for 2006 and bring
additional acts well into 2007, by which time the Cinema will have been opened for many
months, the live theatre venues will have received much greater exposure as a result of
increased activity in the downtown and the shows should be self-supporting. The
construction of Courthouse Square will also be completed by September 2006.
Restaurants and businesses will be supported in the future by the increased activity
generated by the opening of the cinema complex.
About Monta Ivo
Montalvo is a non-profit organization dedicated to "inspiring a love of the arts in everyone
by presenting the best of the literary, performing, and visual arts, supporting practicing
artists in the major creative disciplines., and providing significant arts experiences for
children ,"
Located in the Saratoga hills Montalvo occupies a Mediterranean-style villa which Senator
James Duval Phelan left to the people of California for the encouragement of art, music,
literature, and architecture. Montalvo is one of the largest non-profit arts centers in the US,
and the Villa Montalvo is the largest artists' residency in the western US. The Villa and the
Fox Theatre in Redwood City are Montalvo's primary performance venues.
Montalvo's Proposal
Currently, Montalvo's Redwood City shows continue to operate at a loss, and additional
assistance is needed to ensure that the program continues. Montalvo attributes the losses
to the cost of producing such high-profile shows, construction impacts and the lull in
Downtown activity preceding the opening of the "On Broadway" project. Montalvo is
requesting that the Agency provide a sponsorship of $30,000 for the 2006-07 season so
that the performances may continue. The $30,000 sponsorship will ensure 25 first-rate
performances during the 2006 season, and the booking of additional acts well into the
Spring of 2007.
Montalvo will continue to work closely with restaurants in the Downtown area to promote
concerts and meals through advertising, public relations, website links and on-site
promotion. Similar efforts in the past seasons have resulted in dramatic increases in the
numbers of people eating in area restaurants on performance nights.
Municipal Sponsorship of the Arts in Northern California
Such sponsorships are not uncommon. In fact, most theaters in cities in Northern
California are owned by and subsidized by the cities where they are located. These
include:
. San Francisco: Bill Graham Civic, San Francisco Opera House, Palace of Fine Arts,
and the Symphony Hall.
. San Jose: Center for the Performing Arts, California Fox, Montgomery Theater, San
Jose Repertory Theatre, and the Mexican Heritage Gardens Theater.
1:_REDEVELOPMENT/2006 STAFF REPORTSI04-2006l"Montalvo Grant" 2
-
