Description of Area:
This older residential area is located northwest of downtown Redwood City. The boundaries of
the proposed district generally follow Howard, Allerton, Brewster and Warren Streets, with a
small additional cluster of properties located along Arguello Street between Whipple and Howard
Avenue. In conformance with Federal, State and local historic district standards, the proposed
district boundaries are irregular and jog in order to capture the maximum number of historic
properties as well as exclude incompatible structures. The largest single parcels in the district
include the Mezes Park block whose name and use provide an important historical link to the
original "Mezeville" (literally: the city-ot-Mezes) subdivision. The second other complete block is
occupied by Orion School which is considered non-contributing because neither site nor
structures qualify as historic.

The following addresses and related assessor's parcel numbers are contained within the
proposed district boundaries (contributing properties are in bold)
Background:
ChronoloQical summary:

. June 2005. Planning staff received an inquiry at public counter for a demolition permit
involving three adjacent residential properties in the Centennial/Mezesville neighborhood
area. The city's computerized "flagging" system indicated that these structures were
estimated to be 90-100 years old. Staff followed up with a site inspection to determine
that the subject properties were not architecturally compromised. Finally, per standard
procedures, historical evaluation reports were required for each potential property in order
to determine the historical significance of each one.
. The applicant submitted historical evaluation reports for review by the HRAC for accuracy
and completeness. The HRAC made a recommendation to the Planning Commission to
evaluate the properties in the context of a historic district on July 14, 2005.
. July - September 2005. City consultants "Circa - Historic Property Development" prepared
a district evaluation report on the Mezesville area, On September 6, 2005, the Planning
Commission reviewed the draft report and approves the HRAC recommendation to
proceed with a historic district designation, per specific boundaries recommended in the
Consultant's report.
. November 15,2005. The Planning Commission unanimously voted to schedule a future
public hearing on the proposed district designation.
. Property owners, occupants and other interested parties ofthe Mezesville historic district
proposal were sent public invitation notices for the first informational neighborhood
