88
Page 40

etc that wouldn't have historic districts. Mrs. McElroy said that the City should have such
information available so that potential property owners could find out whether their
building is within a historic district or is individually historic. The evaluation itself would
be a process of looking at the development patterns of this area with the new boundaries
and confirming whether or not the boundaries are correct or should be adjusted. Other
properties up Whipple Avenue. and.other neighborhoods could also be considered
historic districts, but the context for them may be different and it may not be a 'working
mans cluster' of housing. Staff does not yet have that information about what should be
investigated.

Commissioner Gee would like staff to work with Mr. Gonzalez so that he does not have
to wait until findings are made. If there is guidance staff could give him as to what he
can do with the properties that he owns right nowwould..be helpful. Mr. Jany stated that
staff has already met several times with Mr. Gonzalez and looked at different options:
1. reuse of the properties; This needs to be considered with accurate information in more
detail, .and isa very reaJoptionin many communities aJJaround GaJifomia and it is
something that may actually bring more value to a property than less; 2. raze everything
and determine the number and size of units. That does not mean that you can put an
extra.unit now..on wbatexisÍS...as faras.aoaccessoryunit. S,taff wants to ins.ure that the
property owner as a clear understanding of the available alternatives and it hopes that
these altematives can be weighed in a balanced and sensitive way. The key infill
concept in Redwood City ;s compatibility and staff needs to look at compatibility at every
level, whether it is CEQA, Architectural Review, or historic compatibility.

Ms. McEJroystated that with zoning aside, because these buildings are. over 50 years of
age every such building has a potential to be historic.

Janet Borgens, a neighbor, had a question regarding the boundaries and whether it
affected a comer of Whipple where the tracks are. Her concern is with the potential
changing of the track with Cal trains and how is that going to affect the properties on that
comer. Chair Paulson stated that it has been considered.

MIS; (Claire/Radcliff) to adopt recommendation from the Historic Resources Advisory
Committee that the Planning commission confirm the boundaries of the Mezesvile area
for analysis of its historical district potential.
Motion Passed

Page4of11
