7C
the San Mateo program, it is estimated that the Redwood City Police Department would Page 3
need to dedicate approximately 40 hours per week to manage a proposed photo red
light enforcement system. This could be accomplished with a single full-time employee
or two or more part-time employees.
Redwood City Accident and Citation Historv: The City of Redwood City currently has 85
intersections controlled by signal lights. Fifty-eight of these intersections are
maintained by the City of Redwood City, while 27 intersections are maintained by
CalTrans due to their placement along state routes (i.e. Woodside Road and EI Camino
Real). A portion of the research conducted for this informational report included a 5-
year intersection accident history review and a summary of red light violation
enforcement. Statistical information for this 5-year review was gathered from January
1, 2001 to December 31, 2005. The following is a summary of the information
obtained:
Total number of red light violation citations issued from 1/1/01 to 12/31/05: 2,169
Total number of accidents from 1/1/01 to 12/31/05: 7,654
Total number of those accidents that resulted in non-fatal injuries: 2,038
Total number of those accidents that resulted in fatal injuries: 13
Total number of those that were non-injury: 5,603
Total number of accidents from 1/1/01 to 12131/05 caused by red light violations: 304
Total number of those accidents that resulted in non-fatal injuries: 198
Total number of those accidents that resulted in fatal injuries: 1
Total number of those that were non-injury: 105
Total percentage of red light violation accidents from 1/1/01 to 12/31/05: 4%
Accident data history was also reviewed in an attempt to determine which intersections
had the highest number of automobile accidents overall, and which intersections had
the highest number of automobile accidents caused by red light violations. The
following is a summary of this information:
RED-LIGHT VIOLATION ACCIDENTS
TOP 5 INTERSECTIONS
INTERSECTION Red-Light Violation Accidents All Traffic Accidents
Injury Non-Injury Total Injury Non-Injury Total
Jefferson - 16 16 32 33 31 64
Broadwav
Woodside - 12 15 27 47 70 117
Broadway
Woodside - 6 11 17 25 34 59
Veterans
Jefferson - 7 7 14 15 12 27
Hudson
Winslow - 7 7 14 10 10 20
Brewster
._~._--<-_..- -.' --~.._-'-'.""-"<-"'~"""'-"-"'-~--'
