4.A. - Page 3 of 13
Implement Phase I of the Public Art Master Vision Plan
The City Council approved the Public Master Vision Plan on April 9, 2018. The purpose of the Public Art
Master Vision is to provide aesthetic direction to the ongoing public art activities in Redwood City, and to
offer practical tools and recommendations to help realize this vision. One long-term goal for the next 20
years is to create an outdoor museum throughout the City, comprised of talented artists from Redwood
City and the Bay Area, complemented by national and international artists. This growing art collection will
be on view to the public 24/7, free of admission. By supporting, refining, and elevating Redwood City's
Public Art program, the plan can increase community and visitor engagement with the culture of the City
and establish Redwood City as a beacon of creativity, support, dialogue, and diversity.
The Public Art Master Vision provides a number of recommendations. The Commission will focus work on
implementing "Phase 1" (years 1-3) actions, which includes:
• Renaming the CCC to the Redwood City Arts Commission;
• Developing public art submission criteria, related forms for application, and new funding mechanisms;
• Adopting a process for commissioning public art; and
• Developing a comprehensive approval/rejection criteria for public art initiatives.
Improve Commission Communications and Outreach
The Commission has received a number of inquiries about creating an "Arts and Culture" webpage to list
not only City offered programs and events, but also those provided by non-profit entities who have been
awarded grants by the Commission. Improving communication will bring new awareness of what is
offered not only in Downtown Redwood City, but throughout the community.
The Commission also wants to ensure proper, clear and ongoing communication with the City Council on
public art projects, activities, and events.
FISCAL IMPACT
Staff time is required to administer the work plan and to assist the CCC in achieving its goals. It is not
anticipated that an additional appropriation will be required this fiscal year.
ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW
This activity is not a project under California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) as defined in CEQA
Guidelines, section 15378, because it has no potential for resulting in either a direct or reasonably
foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment.
PUBLIC NOTICE
Public Notification was achieved by posting the agenda, with the agenda items being listed, at least 72
hours prior to the meeting.
ALTERNATIVES
The City Council could provide alternative or additional direction on the work plan goals.
City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.ore
8
