4.A. - Page 2 of 13
• The removal, relocation, or alteration of existing works of art or items of cultural significance in
the possession of the city;
• The acquisition by the City of any work of art or item of cultural significance and the proposed
location thereof;
The aesthetics of the design and site development of any building, monument, or other structure
to be constructed or acquired by the City;
Any matter affecting the beauty and culture of the City.
Earlier this year, the City Council requested that each City Board, Committee, and Commission (BCC)
prepare a two-year work plan, beginning with FY 2018-2019, for City Council review and approval. The
purpose of the work plan is to align BCC work with the City Council's Strategic Initiatives. Work plans are
to be prepared by the BCC members and presented to the City Council by the BCC Chair and Vice -Chair.
The CCC held a retreat focused on developing the work plan, and finalized the new mission statement and
three goal areas over three regular meetings.
ANALYSIS
The draft CCC work plan (Attachment 1) includes a new mission statement and three priority goals area
for the Commission to focus on over the next two years.
The Commissioners developed an updated mission statement that they felt better reflects the purpose of
the Commission, and it reads as follows:
The Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission, on behalf of the City Council, ensures that art,
culture, and creative experiences are woven into the fabric of our community by being an advocate
for art and cultural awareness, sponsoring arts and culture through grants, and sanctioning public
art and events.
The Commission then agreed on three main goals:
1. Improve the Grant Process
2. Implement Phase I of the Public Art Master Vision Plan
3. Improve Commission Communications and Outreach
By focusing on these areas, the Commission envisions a number of benefits once they are completed.
Improve the Grant Process
The CCC reviews grant applications from dozens of non-profit organizations, and awards small grants
(under $1,000) and large grants (over $1,000) totaling just under $50,000 each year. The CCC sees that
improvements can be made in the process, including streamlining the application process, developing
new priorities for funding, attracting more arts and culture focused organizations, and "closing the loop"
with organizations through a better evaluation process and measurement of community impact from their
grant awards.
City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.ore
7
