REPORT

To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

March 25, 2002

Subject
Amendment to revocable permit for Redwood City Kiwanis Farmers Market to allow a
longer season for operation lengthening the permitted period by one additional month.

Recommendation
Approve the amendment to the revocable permit to allow the 'Redwood City Kiwanis
Farmers Market to extend the seasonal period of operation from May through November
to April through November each year.

Background
In June 1991, the Redwood City Kiwanis Farmers Market was granted a revocable permit
to operate a Farmers Market on Saturday mornings in downtown Redwood City for the
seasonal period from May through November each year.

In 1999 the City Council approved a request from the Market sponsors to waive the annual
fee of $337 so that the money could be utilized for the rental of restrooms on the days that
the market was open.

Over the years, the Farmers Market has enjoyed success and increased somewhat in size.
There have been no major issues associated with this operation. Many of the surrounding
businesses have indicated their support of the Market. The Market sponsors have
requested that their seasonal period of operation be extended to add one more month.
They would like to be open from April through November beginning this year 2002.

In addition, the revocable permit will be amended to reflect the name of the current
President of the Kiwanis Club Board. Dr. Norman Shapiro, who headed this group for
many years is now deceased.

Fiscal Impact
There are no anticipated fiscal impacts from this request.

Patricia J.
