PORT OF REDWOOD CITY
SOil Francisco /k1y

combine private, local, state, and federal transportation dollars as is done with existing
water transit services in the Bay Area. These sources include: Federal Ferryboat
Discretionary Fund, State Bridge Toll Revenue, San Matco County Measure A sales Tax,
Transit Impact (Developer) Fees, and Farebox Revenue.

Recently, additional funding sources have been proposed. Governor Schwarzenegger has
pledged to support State legislation which would significantly expand water tTansit
service in the Bay Area. One of the factors in expanding ferry service will be to provide
vessels, docking and support facilities that could be used in a disaster situation, such as
the crippling of bridges and roadways, following a major earthquake. Redwood City will
be a strategic location to deploy t.hese vessels and docks for access to the mid-Peninsula
and Silicon VaHey in an emergency or disaster.

City/Port Lead Inwlcmcutation of Fen)' Service

The City and the POlt were instmmental in forming the San Mateo County Water Transit
Advocates, a group of city, business, and transit leaders whose mission is to promote
fetTY service in San Mateo County. Diane Howard from the City Council of Redwood
City and Pedro Gonzalez from the City Council of South San Francisco are the co-chairs
of the Advocates group. The Advocates have promoted ferry service in Redwood City
and South San Francisco through exchanges of inf<.mnation with interested businesses
and stakeholders, representatioll at local and regional transit meetings regarding FetTY
service, and sponsorship of demonstration ferry rides tl'om these two Bayfront cities. The
Advocates have successfully worked on designation of funding for ferry service in
Regional Measure 2 (bridge toll increase), Measure A Sales Tax renewal, and State bond
measures for transportation and transit.

The Port will continue to take the lead and work with the City on local and regional
levels to make ferry service in Redwood City a reality in the near future.

4

78
Page 4
