IO.A'
SITE DESCRIPTION: The subject properties are located in one of the oldest and most
historic portions of the Downtown. Three of the eight parcels have frontage on the
North side of Main Street, a major Downtown thoroughfare, while four have frontage on
the South side. Four of the eight parcels also have frontage on Broadway, another
important Downtown street. A portion of Redwood Creek, historically called "The
Embamadero" (now culverted) runs below ground along the northern edge of the
proposed district. The site is flat, consisting of a mix of one, two and three-story high
commercial properties, seven of the eight parcels contain buildings which are over 50
years old. One historic property (the Alhambra Hall) recently suffered a major interior
fire and is in the process of being repaired in conformance with the Secretary of
Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation.

ADJACENT LAND USES: The proposed historic district site is surrounded by relatively
more contemporary development containing both ground floor retail, office and/or
residential land uses. A parking structure, several parking lots and governmental
buildings are also located nearby.

SPECIAL STUDY AREA: The proposed parcels are part of the Downtown
Redevelopment Area, City Center District and also part of the draft Downtown Area
Plan.

FLOOD HAZARD AREA: No

DEPARTMENT COMMENTING: State Office of Historic Preservation (S.H.P.O.).

BACKGROUND: A "Downtown Historic Commercial District" was placed on the
National Register of Historic Places on November 7, 1977. This district contains
four properties, all of which are currently designated as the following local
historic landmark properties: ("The Diller-Chamberlain Store" (formerly "Quong
Lee Laundry"), "The Bank of San Mateo County Building", "The Fitzpatrick
Building", "The San Mateo County Loan Association Building" (formerly uYoung's
Drug Store ". The proposed Main Street Historic District will expand the
boundaries of this original district

In addition, several buildings proposed for incorporation into the proposed Main
Street Historic District already have historical status. "The Alhambra Hall" was
designated as a local landmark in 2001 and both "The Odd Fellows Hall" and
"The Sequoia Hotel" are classified as Redwood City Historic Resources and
listed on the Redwood City Historic Inventory, which was certified by State).
Also, it should be noted that the property located at 847-849 Main Street
Is listed in our most recent and yet to be published Historic Inventory update.
These historic buildings would qualify as "Contributing Structures" to the
proposed Main Street Historic District. The recently constructed "Mazes Plaza"
building at 1991 Broadway {south west corner of Main Street) would be the only
site classified as a "non-contributing structure" in the proposed Main Street
Historic District.
