BAY AREA WATER USERS ASSOCIATION

APPLICATION TO PARTICIPATE IN "OUR WATER":
A WATER CONSERVATION EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
FOR SCHOOLS IN SAN MATEO AND SANTA CLARA COUNTY

2002/2003 School Year

INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAM

"Our Water" was developed by Kollage Community School for the Arts, a nonprofit organization located
in Belmont, in response to a request from Mid-Peninsula Water District for a creative and user-friendly
approach to water conservation education at the elementary school level. The program was implemented
in all 4th grade classes in the Belmont/Redwood Shores School District in Spring 2001. BAWUA
sponsored creation ora video of the Program's initial year.

The purpose of the Program is to enhance learning about water conservation through creative, as well as
logical, processes. Program goals include demonstrable evidence of students' ability to apply critical
thinking and creative exprcssiun to water conservation concepts; improved water conscrvatiun awareness
as measured on pre- and post-Program tests; and enhanced appreciation of and interest in the arts by both
teachers and students at participating schools.

The "Our Water" curriculum is presented in 50-minute sessions conducted once a week over nine weeks.
Each school or class is assigned an arts instructor in visual art, dance, music, or poetry. Pre- and post-
tests are given to students to measure the effectiveness of the Program in enhancing their water
conservation awareness. Implemanting the Program qualifies as compliance with California's
conservation Best Management Practices (BMP), #8 - Water Education.

At its September meeting, the BAWUA Board of Directors will be considering authorizing BAWUA to
serve as an intermediary and single point of contact to help facilitate members participating in the
Program during the 2002/2003 school year. If thare is interest among BAWUA members in San Mateo
and Santa Clara Counties, BAWUA will contract with Kollage to conduct a nine-week artist-in-residence
th
water conservation program for 4 grade classrooms in San Marco and Santa Clara County public
schools.

COST

The cost for this Program depends on the number of participating school sites and classrooms, with the
cost per classroom decreasing as the number of schools participating increases:

Cost Per
Classroom
Tier 1: i I school 1 through 3 classrooms $880
Tier 2: ] up to 2 schools 4 through 6 classrooms $850
Tier 3: I up to 5 schools 7 through 12 classrooms $750
Tier 4: { up to 10 schools 13 through 22 classrooms $740

(If a school has students from more than one participating BAWUA agency, the costs for that school will
be shared equally between those agencies.)

Application to Participate in "Our Water"
A Water Conservation Educational Program
for Schools In San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties
