8A
Page 2
Approximateiy 875 vehicles per day are currently controlled by the stop signs on Vera
Avenue. Installation of additional stop signs to create a multiway stop would cause an
additional 9,000 vehicles per day to stop and acceierate through the intersection on
Hudson despite the relatively !ow volume of cross traffic.
If Council approves the stop signs, staff must still arrange far construction of the
required signs and markings. lnstallation of the "STOP" (egend and limit line pavement
markings must occur simultaneously with the actual stop signs to ensure public safety at
a new stop-contro[ied location. Because the pavement must be tnoroughly dry to allow
a durable installation of these markings, wet weather can delay the work. Staff
anticipates this stop sign installatian may not be completed until the end of April, but will
work toward implementation as weather and workload permit.
Staff recommends that stop signs be insta(led to address traffic safety.
Alternatives
1. In lieu of propased stop signs, place intersection warning signs with "Cross Traffic
Does Not Stop" supplementary plates or other similar warning signs on existing stop
signs on Vera Avenue approaches at the intersection wifih Hudson Street and eend
red curb at the corners to imprave visibi(ity.
2. The intersection would remain in its present control configuration wifih stops on the
eastbound and westbound approaches of Vera Avenue anci no controls on Hudson
Street.
Fiscat Impact
Stop signs or warning signage and refated pavement markings can be installed for an
estimated cost of $2,000. Funds are available in the 2005-2006 Capital Improvement
Program budget in the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program. Minor maintenance
costs will be incurred in future years.
_._Ll
,?
M.
