COMMENT LETTEfPage ~~

~ c; <<: ~ 1/ WI ~ Iii1
JUN 1 2 2U07 IJl}

June 11, 2007

James L. Redman & Christine Barry-Redman
5 B.urbank Avenue
Redwood City, CA 94063-2922

CITY OF REDWOO
PLANNING SERV!b~r'

City of Redwood City
Planning Commission - Jill Ekas
1017 Middlefield Road,
Redwood City, CA 94063

COstCD Expansion a.Fueling Station

To Whom It May Concern:

Regarding a previous letter, December 21, 2006 your response to my letter was to put a
further traffic signal at Willow & Middlefield. This would additionally create gridlock not only at
the 4PM-6Pm hours, but for most of the daylight hours. It would make the situation more
dangerous by having more red light runners throughout the day. This unsafe traffic situation is
all ready intolerable, by adding a third traffie light it will make the gridlock situation even more
unacceptable than it is currently. My primary concern as a school bus driver in Redwood City is
the safety of the students on my tillS. Let us not forget the fuel truck accident of April 29, 2007
on the S80/80 interchange. If that type of inferno were to happen at the Middlefield Corridor
during peak traffic hours it would a catastrophe with monumental effects. I realize that this is not
an everyday occurrence, but the fact that it has happened recently in the Bay Area, makes it a
possibility. Please do not let this happen to the school children & residents of this heavily
congested trafficked area. Please do what is best for the safety of the community. I fully support
the expansion ONLY of the Costeo Warehouse.

A second concern is the idling traffic on Woodside Road at, Middlefield Road, Spring
Street, Bay Road and Broadway. These areas are all ready at an unacceptable congestion
level. At the noon hour, most weekdays, the southbound off ramp of 101, is backed up at least
one quarter mite. The added attraction of the Costeo fuel station would only add to this backup.
In the Downtown Project & the Stanford HospitaVClinic Project, the traffic was addressed. The
City wants to make the Downtown area mass transit friendly. They have proposed to add bus
kiosks, bike racks & bike lanes to accomplish this. Yet, the City is willing to over congest the
Woodside/Middlefleld intersection which is only .07 miles from Downtown. I do not see this as a
way to promote the use of mass transit or the promotion of an environmentally friendly mode of
transportation. In addition, the over congestion on Woodside Road between Middlefield and
Broadway will affect the residents of the area, the school children at Hoover School & the
patrons of the Hoover Recreational area. They play soccer year round with other sports
seasonally. Why should children be exposed & subjected to the added pollutants being emitted
from idling vehicles into the environment. As an adult, Ufe long asthmatic, I personally do not
want more pollutants added to the air that I breathe.

Has Costee done any research into a hydrogen fueling station? Or installing an electric
car charging station? Does Costco have any future plans in these environmentally friendly
areas? Let us be aware of the greenhouse gas emissions after all, the State of California is
trying to lead the way in reducing greenhouse gases. Your current proposal does not promote a
healthy atmosphere or environment. It goes in the opposite direction. The extra added oil
seepage from consumers' vehicles will run off into the storm drainage system & eventuany into

.,

1

l
J

@l
@
1
