RESOLUT�ON RELATING TO HEALTHY AGING <br /> Source: Community Services Policy Com�nittee <br /> Referred to: Community Services Policy Committee <br /> Recommendation to General Resolutions Committee: <br /> WHERBAS, according to tl�e Brookings Tnstitute,the aging U.S.population will bebin to <br /> xz�ushroom when the leading edge of the large baby-booz�a generation --boz-r�between 2946 and 1965 -- <br /> reaches the age of 65 in the year 2011; and <br /> WHEREAS, any discussion of the changing senior population must also include the World War <br /> II generation,born between 1.93b and t945,whose mernbers are currently entering the 65-and oider <br /> category; and <br /> WHEREAS, according irie Brooxings Institute, California and Flor,'da have large existing se;.ior <br /> populatio^s, and will experience gains of more than SOO,OOC senio:-s during the 2000 to 2010 pe,riod; and <br /> WI-�EREAS,the h.ea3.th of a community thrives when all of its residents,from youth to seniors are <br /> healthy and active; and <br /> WHERBAS,in order to preserve the quality of life and h.eaItla of seniors,cities need to be actively <br /> involved and have the necessary information and tools to assist with the chai�ging senior population <br /> which includes the baby booz�ers anci the World War II generation; and <br /> WHEREAS, cities�nay address quality of life tl�rough existing programs that address issues such <br /> as"fall preventions"by implementing programs similar to the"Down with Fatls Coalition of Orange <br /> County"and others which were ca•eated to conduct cauntywide fali prevention needs assessmenis and <br /> create 3-5 year strategic plans to address the issue; and <br /> WHEREAS, cities�nay plan for universal housing to einphasize the importance of independent <br /> living designs that may include reinforced towel bars,A.DA campliance and short distance transportatioiz; <br /> �n�. <br /> WHEREAS, cities may be involved with prograins to address active senior livi��g including <br /> intergenerational programs sucl� as tnentoring that help to improve the quality of life for seniors and <br /> youtl�in a community; now,therefore be it <br /> RESOLVED,by the General Assemhly of the League of California Cities assembled in Annual <br /> Conference in Sacramento, September 8,2007,that the League examine prograins,infrastrueture and <br /> funding for Calrfornia cities addressing the aging population; and,be it further <br /> RESOLVED, that the issue of planning for an aging populaiion will be supported by the League <br /> through education and conference prograinming to share ideas and develop a dialo�tte with elected <br /> officials throughaut the state. <br /> //////U// <br /> No Back�rnund Information Submitted for Resolation#2 <br /> »»»»» <br /> 4 <br />
