worse. She expressed concerns with the traffic pattern and exposure to the children
at Hoover School.
Helen Steinberg says Costco is being blamed for things that are not Costco's fault
and she supports the store. She further stated that Costco provides good customer
service and good quality products. She stated that less pollution occurs from her
because she does not need to go to individual stores for her purchases.
James Redman, 49-year Redwood Village resident, stated that he has seen many
changes. He stated that he is a Costco shopper, a school bus driver, and his main
concern is the safety of the children on his bus. He concluded that he is only an
opponent of the gas station portion of the project.
C.J. Barry-Redman stated she is opposed to the gas station only. She stated that
she had spent time at the Sunnyvale Costco counting cars entering and exiting the
gas station portion only. The gas station line obstructed the parking and the
pollution is not fair to the kids.
Jerry Brick expressed respect for the Redwood Village group while expressing
support for the Costco expansion and gas station. He stated that the protests seem
to be on technicalities — not typographical errors but statistical errors. He stated his
belief that we should put our confidence in the actual engineering studies done by
the four firms who have nothing to sell but their credibility and engineering stamp.
He supported 16 pumps rather than 12 because pumps do not produce customers
but help facilitate coming and going.
Foust/Aguirre to extend the meeting to 12:00 a.m. The motion passed by a
unanimous voice vote.
Gerald Nagle stated that the design of the pumps and the vehicles actually do not
allow any fumes into the air from pumping the gasoline itself. The area is
surrounded by Woodside Road, Highway 101, and Caltrain which are busy all week
long, trailing off on Saturday and Sunday so that overall the pollution will be down
on weekends.
Fred Tavemier thanked Costco for patience during the process while urging the
City Council to accept the Planning Commission and Zoning Administrator
decisions. He asked consideration of the close to 10,000 people who signed the
petition in favor of the gas station and expanded warehouse.
Bill Heath urged denial of the appeal and allowing Costco to build the gas station
stating that we all pay more for gasoline than we used to and the only way to beat
that is price competition. He stated that Costco does an excellent job at creating
competition.
JOINT CITY COUNCIU/REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY BOARD MEETING AUGUST 13, 2007
MINUTES PAGE 6
