The Prius is classified as a passenger vehicle with no operational specificity
incorporated into the models and has been inadequately serving the needs of the Fire Department's
Inspectors.
ANALYSIS
The 2007 Toyota Prius' have served the Fire Department beyond their useful life and are now in need of
replacement. However, the Fire Department has identified that the replacements for these vehicles
should be Ford F150 trucks as they more appropriately meet the operational demands of the Fire
Department. Fire inspectors require their vehicles to be outfitted with inspection tools and equipment, as
well as personal protective equipment. The use of the Prius' for this purpose has been challenging for the
duration of the life of the vehicle. The Prius does not offer adequate storage and proper housing of soiled
personal protective equipment from the scene of a fire where hazardous materials are present. Often
times, these materials are stowed within the backseat or trunk of the Prius which is all part of the
passenger compartment of the vehicle creating unnecessary exposure to potentially hazardous material.
The F150 truck offers ample capacity and proper storage placement of all tools and personal protective
equipment by providing separate compartments for tools and equipment.
