61. - Page 4 of 7 <br />BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ARTS COMMISSION <br />LARGE GRANT APPLICANTS FY 19-20 <br />Art Bias. Art Bias is a non-profit originally established in 1992 as the Art Center of Redwood City. <br />From mid -2017-2018, the Presidency and Board of Directors reformed and created a new name, <br />mission, policies, and procedures. The Art Center has evolved into a multi -program provider to all <br />artists, with a special focus on artists in the peninsula area. Support from the Redwood City Arts <br />Commission will enable Art Bias to continue providing and enhancing its emerging Speaker Series <br />Program which offers Artist Development Conferences and Art Demos to the community at a lower - <br />than -market affordable price. <br />Funding Requested: $9,447. Funding Recommended: $2,000. <br />Ballet America. Ballet America is a community based Ballet Company for students ages 2 - 65. <br />Funds requested are to provide funding for their annual production of "The Nutcracker" held at the <br />Fox Theater. The production includes two matinees and evening performance and is part of with <br />the annual Hometown Holiday event held annually on the first Saturday of December. <br />Funding Requested: $2,500. Funding Recommended: $1,100. <br />Bay Shore Lyric Opera Company. The Bay Shore Lyric Opera Company is a nonprofit <br />organization founded in 1996 in Northern California that serves audiences in the Greater Bay Area <br />counties. BSLO is producing the opera "FALSTAFF" for one night show on September 8th, 2019 on <br />the Courthouse Square. Admission for this opera is free. <br />Funding Requested: $2,500 Funding Recommended: $1,100. <br />Broadway by the Bay. This is Broadway by the Bay's (BBB) ninth season at the Fox Theater and <br />the third time they have applied for a grant from the Commission. BBB has scheduled four full <br />scale musical performances bringing over 20,000 patrons annually to core of downtown Redwood <br />City. Their funding request is for scholarships for their Theatre Arts Academy summer youth <br />training program. <br />Funding Requested: $5,000 Funding Recommended: $2,000. <br />Casa Circulo Cultural. Casa Circulo Cultural in partnership with San Mateo County History <br />Museum and the Redwood City Library Foundation are inviting the community to participate in the <br />9th Annual Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead event downtown Redwood City on Theater Way in <br />November 2019. Attendees can come and enjoy sugar skull painting, children's activities, Catrinas <br />face painting for adults and children, altars created by families, procession, music and traditional <br />food and treats. The day emphasizes the traditional, cultural, and artistic values of the Mexican <br />culture. Funding for from the Arts Commission will help increase the capacity of the event across <br />the board. <br />Funding Requested: $4,000. Funding Recommended: $2,800. <br />Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival. For the third year in a row, Cinequest has partnered with <br />Century 20 Theater to bring their creativity festival to downtown Redwood City, March 3-151h, <br />2020. Cinequest fuses innovation with the arts to empower great creations and to connect <br />audiences, youth, artists, and innovators with these creations and with each other. Funding from <br />the Commission would go towards the centralized hangout area proposed for next year's event that <br />would be active 5-7 days out of the festival for patrons and community members to congregate <br />between screenings to network and build community while enjoying refreshments, as well as <br />creative activations (examples: DJ, live painting, stand-up comedy, poetry reading). <br />Funding Requested: $10,000.
