Since this is a current issue I will
share the materials received to assist our Parks and Rec. dept.
The presentation on Climate change provided materials that can help the city shape our outreach to the
community to enlist their assistance in energy and water conservation. How to shape the message and frame
the issue to encourage individual and community action were especially insightfuL I will provide the materials to
our staff committee.
The session on public art - how to incorporate it into your community and how to fund it are of special
interest as the Cultural Commission has long been interested in increasing the public art in Redwood City. The
presentation by Sacramento with a large collection of art, and Chico with a much smaller collection provided a
range of options and approaches that may be of interest in our community.
I attended two sessions that focused on the development of transit - if we build it will they ride it and
multimodal transportation policies. The information will be helpful in discussions on the congestion
management environmental quality committee that deals with regional traffic congestion and as Redwood City
participates in regional transportation discussions.
An additional benefit of the conference was the opportunity to talk with council representatives from San
Mateo County about our shared issues regarding transportation, and representatives from all over the state
regarding their best management practices concerning attracting retail, code enforcement and housing issues.
I joined with council members from Menlo Park, Foster City, and Brisbane to speak with Assemblyman Ruskin
and Senator Simitian about the bills on transportation funds, eminent domain, and the budget
On Saturday, I voted in the general assembly, al14 issues passed, including the limiting of group homes
within 300ft. This will change the league policy in advocating a complete tracking of a!! group homes and
encouraging none closer than 300 ft. As bills come up in the legislature there will be an opportunity for
recommending that any jurisdiction that wishes to modify this distance be able to do so. Currently local
jurisdictions have no legal power in this area.

~~L-~_

9/19/2007
Date

Signature of Council Member

The Administrative Code requires reports of conferences or meetings for which a council member requests per diem or expense reimbursement.
Reports must be submitted to the City Clerk of no later than the Wednesday of the week before the next City Council meeting.
