2. Hazard Analysis
2.1 CITY DESCRIPTION
Redwood City is a community in San Mateo County and is the County seat, located between San Francisco
and San Jose in the Peninsula region of the San Francisco Bay Area. It is bordered by the town of Woodside
to the south, the town of Atherton and the City of Menlo Park to the east, and the cities of San Carlos,
Belmont, and Foster City to the north and west. Redwood City fronts the San Francisco Bay, and bay
marshes and islands make up a large part of the city's northern area.
Redwood City was developed during California's Gold Rush period and incorporated in 1867, the first city
in San Mateo County to do so. The original town was home to a diverse array of industries, including
warehousing and shipping, manufacturing, and agriculture. Today, the City's location near San Jose and
San Francisco has made it a center of the technology industry. The City's largest employers include several
technology companies, government, and educational and health care institutions. As of 2016, Redwood
City had an estimated population of 82,595 people according to the US Census Bureau, making it the third
most -populous community in San Mateo County.
