It is designated as a Federal Staging Area <br />in the San Francisco Bay Catastrophic Earthquake Plan) <br />• Public Works <br />The Fire and Police Departments are primarily responsible for public safety. Disaster preparedness <br />activities, including management of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), are conducted by <br />the Fire Department. The Public Works Department is also responsible for public safety in regards to in <br />maintaining the City's critical infrastructure including potable water, wastewater/storm drains, and local <br />roadway infrastructure. <br />The City provides water service to the entire community, as well as portions of neighboring communities. <br />The City operates approximately 259 miles of water pipes, 12 storage reservoirs, and 10 booster pumps. <br />Most of the City's water is purchased from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, which sources <br />approximately 85 percent of its water from the Hetch Hetchy watershed in Yosemite National Park and <br />conveys it to San Francisco through the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct, which runs through Redwood City. The <br />remaining 15 percent is sourced from local creeks. The City also receives a small amount of recycled water <br />for non -potable uses, such as irrigation and cooling. <br />The City provides sewer services to most of the community, although some areas are served by San Mateo <br />County. The City -owned sewer system consists of 200 miles of pipes and 31 lift stations. The City's <br />wastewater is pumped to a treatment plant in the Redwood Shores neighborhood operated by Silicon <br />Valley Clean Water, which also treats wastewater from other area communities.
