Most customers receive their electricity from
Peninsula Clean Energy, an agency comprised of San Mateo County governments that sells electricity to
customers using PG&E -owned infrastructure. PG&E provides natural gas service to the City.
The primary transportation route in Redwood City is US Route 101, which runs along the shore of San
Francisco Bay in the northern part of the community. It connects north to San Francisco, south to San Jose,
and to points beyond. Interstate 280, which is situated just southwest of Redwood City, provides an
alternate route between San Francisco and San Jose. Primary surface streets that provide connections to
nearby communities include EI Camino Real, Woodside Road, and Alameda de las Pulgas.
The City is served by Caltrain, a commuter rail network that provides regular service between San Francisco
and San Jose, with some trains continuing south to Morgan Hill and Gilroy. This railway corridor will also
contain California high-speed rail trains, although these trains are not expected to stop in Redwood City
(the nearest station is planned for Millbrae, approximately 11 miles northwest of downtown). Bus service
in the City is provided by SamTrans, which serves all of San Mateo County, as well as providing connections
to San Francisco and northern Santa Clara County. The nearest major, commercial airports are San
Francisco International Airport, Norman Y Mineta San Jose International Airport, and Oakland
International Airport. There are civil aviation airports in Palo Alto and San Carlos.
There are two primary hospitals in Redwood City: the Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center
just north of downtown, and Sequoia Hospital in the western part of the community. The City School
District covers all of Redwood City, as well as parts of nearby Atherton, Menlo Park, San Carlos, and
Woodside. The district operates 15 elementary schools and two middle schools. Redwood City is part of
the Sequoia Union High School District, which serves Atherton, Belmont, East Palo Alto, San Carlos, Menlo
Park, Portola Valley, and Woodside. The district operates six high schools, two of which (Redwood High
School and Sequoia High School) are located in the City.
0
