3.10.10 REDWOOD CITY COMMUNITY ALERT SYSTEMS <br />The City is part of a Countywide program that offers emergency alerts to community members. The <br />emergency alert system is called SMC ALERT. The alert/notification system is used to immediately contact <br />subscribers during urgent or emergency situations. <br />3.10.11 NIXLE <br />NIXLE Connect allows the Redwood City Police Department to communicate with the public via text/SMS, <br />email and Internet posts at no cost. NIXLE is the primary resource for distributing secure information to <br />residents over the department's Web -based platforms. Communications range from emergency alerts to <br />routine day-to-day information, including traffic advisories, missing persons reports, public safety <br />announcements, press releases for high-profile cases, awards and other relevant information to the area. <br />Redwood City residents can sign up to receive free, real-time safety information by texting their zip code <br />to 888777 or by visiting www.nixle.com. Once registered, users can customize the types of alerts they wish <br />to receive via text, email and online. <br />3.10.12 PENINSULA TELIVISION (PENTV) <br />Peninsula TV is a 501c3 nonprofit community television station and professional video services provider. <br />They are supported by the County of San Mateo, the cities within the County, a number of for-profit <br />enterprises within the County, as well as individual PenTV members. <br />PenTV broadcasts its television signal throughout most of San Mateo County to over 275,000 households <br />on cable networks Comcast -26, Wave -27, and AT&T U -verse -99. They also stream all programming on their <br />website, www.pentv.tv, 24/7/365. While the station's primary mission is to produce, acquire, and <br />broadcast programming that is interesting and of value to the community, they can provide alerts and <br />warnings and detailed instructions from local governments. <br />3.10.13 SOUTH COUNTY AMATEUR RADIO EMERGENCY SERVICES (SCARES) <br />The principal mission of the South County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (SCARES) group is to provide <br />emergency communication for the communities of Belmont, Foster City, Menlo Park/Atherton, Redwood <br />City, San Carlos, and San Mateo when called upon. SCARES will also provide communications services to <br />communities served for special events such as parades, foot or bicycle races, etc., whenever appropriate <br />for the purpose of training and enhancement of communications skills of its members. <br />There is an amateur radio station in Redwood City Police Department headquarters which consists of VHF <br />and UHF voice radios and a VHF Packet station (computer to computer via radio modem). An RS -232 serial <br />line connects a computer in the EOC to the packet station. The radio room is adjacent to the lunch room <br />on the second floor [enter lunch room, turn left, go to end of room].
