6.1. - Page 1 of 18
/<ik
Redwood
CitylCallifornia
Faunded 1867
A,&/
DATE: July 22, 2019
SUBJECT
STAFF REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
Acceptance of Donation for the Magical Bridge Playground Project from the Magical Bridge Foundation
RECOMMENDATION
By motion, accept the donation from the Magical Bridge Foundation of artist/fabricator Jen Lewin's
"Magical Harp and Light Pools" for the Magical Bridge Playground's Innovation Zone.
STRATEGIC INITIATIVE
Community for All Ages
BACKGROUND
The Magical Bridge Playground will be a fully inclusive and accessible playground for everyone. The unique
partnership with the Magical Bridge Foundation enabled the City to leverage partnerships, sponsorships,
corporate and school giving campaigns, and individual donations that have totaled more than $3 million.
On October 22, 2018, the Magical Bridge Playground project was awarded to Bothman Construction
Company as the lowest responsible bidder. The project was awarded as a base bid only due to the high
cost of the five listed site alternates, which included the restroom building, large trees, landscaping,
boulders, carpentry, barbeque grills, and picnic tables. In consideration of containing costs, the City chose
to take on the work to save money and reject the alternates.
The Magical Bridge Foundation would like to install an additional playground amenity as part of the
playground's "Innovation Zone." This includes the work of the artist/fabricator used for the Magical Bridge
Playground in Palo Alto. Jen Lewin's "Magical Harp" is a playground favorite there. The Magical Bridge
Foundation has offered to the City a donation of Jen Lewin's Magical Harp and Light Pools for our project
in the estimated value of $175,000.
City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.ore
159
