6.1. - Page 1 of 3
/<ik
Redwood
CitylCallifornia
Faunded 1867
Ago/
DATE: August 26, 2019
SUBJECT
STAFF REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
Final Acceptance — Middlefield Road and Woodside Road Intersection Improvements Project
RECOMMENDATION
By motion, accept the Middlefield Road and Woodside Road Intersection Improvements Project, and
authorize the release of bonds and retention according to City procedures.
STRATEGIC INITIATIVE
Transportation
BACKGROUND
Woodside Road presents a barrier to pedestrian travel and tends to divide the neighborhood communities
along the corridor. Prior to the project, at the signalized intersection of Middlefield Road and Woodside
Road, there were no pedestrian amenities, and pedestrian crossings were prohibited. Nevertheless, some
pedestrians chose to walk across Woodside Road at Middlefield because it provided a direct and desirable
path of travel between the neighborhoods on either side of Woodside Road. A continuous, direct, walking
route along Middlefield Road and across Woodside Road helps reduce the dependence on driving and
supports residents for whom walking is their preferred or only form of transportation.
On May 22, 2017, Council awarded the Middlefield Road Intersection Improvements construction contract
to Granite Rock Company of San Jose for a base bid of $1,562,685.
ANALYSIS
This project addressed the community need for increased pedestrian mobility by reconstructing the
intersection and traffic signal system to provide continuous sidewalks leading to the intersection and
signalized crosswalks on all sides of the intersection. This project provides a new, fully accessible,
pedestrian path of travel across Woodside Road. Other associated project improvements include
City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.ore
105
