8.A. - Page 68 of 85
My other big concern is the trees. Our neighborhood has many large old trees. Generally, builders want to cut
trees down because it's more complicated and expensive to work around them than to get rid of them. I used to
live in Palo Alto, and many times builders would chop down trees and pay the fine (`oops, sorry, didn't get a
permit') because this was cheaper than working around the trees. Of course, they have to plant replacement
trees but those take forever to grow (a builder is certainly not going to plant a tree anywhere close to the size of
what they got rid of). The large old trees provide much needed shade and keep the air cleaner, as you know.
They are a great resource for the city and its residents.
Anything you can do to preserve the charm of the old neighborhoods is much appreciated. And if there is
anything I can do from a distance (I am presently on the East Coast with grandkids), or when I finally get there
(early October), please let me know!
Sincerely,
Carol Zink
Redwood City
344
