6.2A
Page 1

REPORT

To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

October 22, 2007

Subject
Resolution amending the City of Redwood City's Classification Plan

Recommendation
1. Approve by resolution revisions to the City Clerks job description.
2. Approve by resolution the adoption of the job specification of Code Enforcement
Officer 1/11.
3. Approve resulting budget appropriations.

Background
From time to time, departments may request new positions, changes to current
classifications or new classifications depending on the changing needs of their
departments. The Human Resources department is responsible for evaluating these
requests and conducting compensation and classification comparisons and analyses.
Outlined below are two requests requiring City Council review and approval.

1. Revisions to City Clerk Job Description

The City of Redwood City maintains job descriptions for all positions within the City's
classification system. Periodically, job descriptions are reviewed and modified to meet
current market standards andlor to update new duties and responsibilities that have
over time become essential functions of the position. With the recent announcement
that the City Clerk will be retiring, the current job description was reviewed and
proposed minor revisions were developed. The main revisions include the following:

· Added clarifying language pertaining to responsibility for ensuring compliance
with various laws;
· Based on internal review and analysis of current market standards, the
requirement for three years of supervisory experience was added;
· Included the requirement for a professional certification as Municipal Clerk or
participation in a program leading toward certification and;
· Updated the job specification to be more consistent with recently updated
classes (Le. added a "Special Requirements" Section; which is the standard for
all city job descriptions.)

Attached for your review is the revised job description for City Clerk (see attachment 1.)
