Your hard work is much appreciated by me and other members of Fossil Free Mid -Peninsula! I've been studying the Reach Codes (building codes for all new buildings) that the Menlo Park City Council will be passing tomorrow (see attachment). I'm impressed that they have decided to require that all new residential and non-residential buildings be all -electric (no gas for space heating, water heating, etc), with very few exceptions. There's a table summarizing the requirements on page 4 of the attached document. Because Menlo Park has so thoroughly discussed and researched their Reach Codes (including a cost effectiveness analysis), it would save the Redwood City city council members and your staff a great deal of time and energy if they adopt similar Reach Codes for Redwood City. (In case the attachment doesn't come through, there's a link to an earlier version of the Menlo reach code here, from the city managers office.) Adopting ambitious Reach Codes will have a great impact in reducing our carbon footprint, and meeting Climate Action Plan goals. And, as you know, climate change/ sea level rise means expensive infrastructure projects including sea walls. Taking decisive action now is an important investment that will reduce the magnitude and expense of such infrastructure upgrades in the future.
