7A
Page 30

1919 Sanborn Map. The property was sold to Richard Schmidt Jr. and his wife May, in 1928
although they are listed in the city directory for 1920 as living at 816 Hopkins (original address
for 1816 Hopkins) suggesting that they may have rented before purchase. Schmidt was the son of
Max Schmidt, founder of the renowned Schmidt Lithograph Company of San Francisco. After
his father's death, Richard Schmidt Jr. continued the success of the business until his death in
1958. He remained at the residence until 1950 and the property has had several owners since.
The property has remained nearly intact from the original subdivision of the late Romantic
Suburb design trend of commuter railroad and street car-based neighborhoods, and is an
excellent representation of the post-1906 earthquake Redwood City development. The residence
is not of the typical California Craftsman Style but more reminiscent of East Coast revival
architecture with Craftsman Style overtones. The comer parcel setting has changed somewhat
over time, however, mature trees and plantings are existent, and the general setting and
environment are in place thereby retaining a high level of integrity.

Significance: The property meets the Redwood City Criteria for designation as a Redwood
City Historic Landmark. A. It exemplifies or reflects special elements of the City's culturall
aesthetic or architectural history; B. It is identified with persons or events significant in local,
State or national history; and C. It embodies distinctive characteristics of a style, type, period or
method of construction, or is a valuable example of the use of indigenous materials or
craftsmanship. The property has therefore been assigned the California Register Status Code
5S3 = appears to be individually eligible for local listing or designation. This status code is
equivalent to The National Register of Historic Places Status Code 5S 1: Not eligible for National
Register but of local interest because the resource is separately listed or designated un an existing
local ordinance, 0 r is eligible for such listing or designation.
