Significance: Theme: Architectural development Area: Redwood City
Period of Significance: 1908 _ 2001 Property Type: Residence Applicable Criteria: RWC Reg
(Discuss importance in terms of historical Of architectural context as defined by 1heme, period. and geographic scope. Also address integrity.)
In 1908 Wm. Dingee sold over 600 acres to Wm. H Crocker, as the first phase of the Dingee Park Subdivision (also known as
Redwood Highlands). Blocks were subdivided and then lots auctioned off in 1909 by the real estate firm of Baldwin and Howell.
A 1909 auction map shows that lot 20 block 44 was not available for auction. 1909 Baldwin and Howell auction records have no
recordings for the subject property supporting the conclusion that the property was already occupied. In 1912 Carolan M. Crocker
Martenstein (with PJ. Zimmerman, builder) completed conslrUction of the cottage. Theodore Martenstein was only listed in the
1911 directory at rms 255 Main, most likely waiting for completion of the residence. Due to its remote location at the time the
residence doesn't appear on the Sanborn map unlit 1919. The map illustrates that the residence was one of only 3 on the block,
and one of the earliest in the entire subdivision. The residence was sold to Henry and Pauline Northrup in 1914and it remained in
the family until 1936 when it was sold to Henry and Marie Hansen. The Hansen family sold the property to Richard and Bethal
Morgan in 1941 and the Morgan's retained the property until 2001. The residence is an excellent example of early twentieth
century architecture with an unusual double. front gable Craftsman design. It retains a high level of integrity and is significant as
an early subdivision property that well represents the post-l906 development in Redwood City.
Significance: The property meets the Redwood City Criteria for desigJiation as a Redwood City Historic Landmark.
B11.
