statement; and <br />WHEREAS, proposed NFPA Standard 1710, if adopted by the NFPA, may be <br />accepted by federal agencies, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, <br />and insurance companies, with the result that local jurisdictions indirectly may be <br />compelled to follow the standard; and <br />WHEREAS, NFPA Standard 1710, if adopted, would impose unnecessary <br />economically onerous burdens upon local communities; and <br />WHEREAS, in disregarding local conditions and concerns, the proponents of NFPA <br />Standard 1710 have violated the mission statement of the NFPA and diminished the <br />NFPA's stature as an independent, objective professional organization; and <br />WHEREAS, proposed Standard 1710 will be considered and voted upon at the <br />NFPA Annual Conference on May 16, 2001, in Anaheim, California; and <br />WHEREAS, this Council desires to signify its opposition to proposed Standard 1710 <br />and to urge the NFPA to adhere to its lofty objectives by withdrawing or defeating proposed <br />Standard 1710 in recognition of its intrusion into a matter solely of local concern; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />REDWOOD CITY AS FOLLOWS: <br />1.
