\.._,..

.~

....1,,;4IJ1

IV. DILLER OR CHAMBERLAIN STORE; 726 Main Street (Presently Quong Lee Laundry)

This brick building was built ~n 1859 by John V. Diller who operated a general
store and purchased in 1876 by P.P. Chamberlain who conducted a store and
Wells Fargo & Co. Express Agency for many years at this location. Because
this building was superior in construction to the first San Mateo County
Courthouse and as Chamberlain was County Treasurer for many years, County
funds were kept in two large safes here. During World War I, the building
was used for aviation classes associated with the pilot training activities
at the Redwood City Airport. The architecture is Provincial Greek Revival,
much like the period commercial buildings of the Mother Lode. The original
iron shutters remain on the rear windows. The Diller or Chamberlain Store
is the oldest commercial building still standing in Redwood City and is one of
the few early buildings that marks the location of Redwood City's old waterfront.
It dates from the days when Redwood City's primary commercial street was Main
Street. The store carried a wide variety of articles, stocking everything
from pins to waterpipes. It was the social center of town.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Page

6
