FIRE STATION #1; 1044 Middlefield Road <br /> <br />This tan brick, concrete, and terra cotta Romanesque-style building built <br />in 1921 is basically unaltered. This is probably the fourth home of the <br />Redwood City Fire Department. The building is located on what was once <br />called Diller's Island, which was a marshy peninsula between two main <br />branches of Redwood Creek. <br /> <br />The City's elementary school was located on this "island" from 1864 until <br />1895, when the Central Grammar School was built on another lot (where the <br />Fox Theatre now stands). Students got to school on foot-bridges over <br />the creek from the Broadway and Main Street sides. The building, a large two- <br />story structure, is still on its original site and is in excellent condition. <br />The only threat to Fire Station #1 would be a public works project. <br /> <br /> <br />HISTORIC PRESERVATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE <br /> <br />Page 7 <br />
