7B
EPf' age
Tt tti HonQrable Mayor an# # nci
_ _ Frm fi.e i Mn r
December 17, 20Q7
SUBJECT
Adopfion of the 2006 lnternational Fire Code and Locat Amendments.
RECOMMENDATIN
1. Introduce the fire code ordinance for first ceading on December 17, 2007 and adopt
the fire code with necessary locai amendments on January 14, 208.
2. By resolu#ion (a) determine that local conditions require modificatian to the
fnternational Fire Code and {b) approve the associated findings of fact; and by
orcEinance, adopt the praposed changes to the Redwood City Municipal Code for
Fire Prevention.
BACKGROUND
This report contains recommenda#ions to approve the adoption of the International Fire
Code, and the resolution supporting the findings of fact allowing amendments to the
city's Municipal Code.
Redwood Ci#y has periodically adopted revisions of the Uniform Fire Code into te
Municipal Code for the protection of life and property. For many years the State of
California and the City of Redwood City have both adopted the Uniform Fire Code.
For this code adoption cycle, the Califomia Bui(ding Standards Commission, as
appointed by the Govemor, has adopted the 2006 edition of the lnternational Fire Code
as the model code for the State of Califomia. The Intemational Fire Code is also the
Fire Code now adopted throughout most of the United States. A major advantage of the
International Fire Code is that it is aligned with other codes in the Interna#ianal Code
series, particularly the Intemational Building Code.
The adoption of the 2006 edition of the (ntemationa! Fire Code wilf be consistent wi#h
what our neighboring jurisdic#ions are doing and wilf aid in the application ofi fire codes
on a regional basis.
Fire Codes are pub(ished every three ysars and presented for local adoption. Redwood
City's proposal to adopt the International Fire Code with Local Amendments was
provided to the Redwaod City Board of BuiEding Review for consideration. The Board of
Bui(ding Review has recommended the adoption of the proposed fire code ordinance
with local amendments. The lntemational Fire Code is being presented to Council for
adoption at the same time as the International Building Code by the Community
Develapment Services Department.
Wark on the adoption of the International Fire Code, along with local amendments, and
the international Building Code has been done in clase coordination with the
Community Development Services Department.
