88
Page 12

expanded board may further it along. The different segments of users including
high tech folks, business people, parents, retirees, teens, new immigrants are most
reflective of our community. Fundraising is the purview of the library foundation,
but could be helpful for the library board (as would any specific skill), but should
not be at the expense of a diverse representation that reflects our community.

15. Should the terms of office of board members be limited? On the one hand, there
may be need for turn over on our boards and commissions to engender fresh ideas
and new energy. On the other hand, some very qualified people continue to serve
and give substantial value.

Past history of library boards shows that there is a natural turnover of membership
without prescribing a term limit. Suggest not changing charter.

16. Please share the library's current and future plans for the community.

The library has a strategic plan (attached). The library should focus on literacy,
especially getting our kids and families to read so they can succeed in school.
Programs like Project READ and our youth services programs collaborate with
dozens of community partners (school district, county, PRCS, hospitals) to help
achieve this.

Creating libraries so that all members of the community feel welcome and
comfortable is a priority also. There is a need for increasing community
connections through spaces, programs and borrowing books and other materials.

The library is also trying to provide meaningful volunteer opportunities for folks
of all ages (tutoring, reading to disadvantaged kids, etc) that help our community
members feel part of the city and further our mission. This community building
and developmental asset building not only helps our youth, but helps create
community with our volunteers.

Adopting business models of customer service, easy-to-use contemporary
services, and efficient and effective use of resources are a priority. General fund
resources that can be used as matching in-kind donations from the State and other
funders are extremely important. Project READ's model is based on this; as is our
collaboration with the Redwood City School District (and of course the state grant
for the new library).

Bottom-line, our library's success will help our schools succeed, make our
'neighborhoods safer, help our economy, increa~e a feeling of community, and
contribute to providing viable and educated graduates for local employment.

17. What are the links between the future planning of the library and overall city
planning?
