78

Work on the adoption of the International Fire Code, along with local amendments, and Page 2
the International Building Code has been done in close coordination with the
Community Development Services Department.

A detailed executive summary of the fire code ordinance will be published an additional
two times, five days before the public hearing and fifteen days after.

Local amendments to the 2006 edition of the International Fire Code and to the
Redwood City Municipal Code in the proposed Ordinance(s) include the following:

1. Administrative changes and updates to existing sections and references to conform
to language within, and publication of the new Code.
2. Addition of language that will enhance information provided by fire alarm systems;
carry forward and codify the existing fireworks ban; and improve emergency radio
communications in large structures.
3. Delete the requirement of air replenishment systems in high-rise buildings.
4. Clarifies threshold requirements for the installation of fire sprinklers in additions to
residential structures (will be set at 1000 square feet or greater vs. percentage of
structure involved in construction).
5. Continue prohibiting the storage of Class 1 flammable liquids in basements by
enhancing provisions of the International Fire Code.

ALTERNATIVES
1. Waive the adoption of the Fire Code with local amendments which will result in
Redwood City being regulated by the Fire Code as adopted by the State of
California.
2. Direct staff to further review the proposed ordinance based upon public comments.

FISCAL IMPACT
Adoption of the International Fire Code will present similar costs to update materials
used for our department personnel (estimated to be $4,000.00) as in each previous
code adoption cycle. No new department funding is required.

-

,v~

Peter Ingl~/v-
Interim City Manager

ATTACHMENTS
1.
