• <br /> 01/14/2008 <br /> ENGINEERED GRADING. An excavation greater than two (2) feet in depth; <br /> where cut slope is greater than five (5) feet in height; where fill is to be placed on <br /> natural grade steeper than 20% (1:5 ratio); where fill is greater than three (3) <br /> feet in height; where fill supports a structure; or which consist of more than 50 <br /> cubic yards. <br /> EROSION. The wearing away of the ground surface as a result of the movement <br /> of wind, water or ice. <br /> EXCAVATION. The removal of earth material by artificial means also referred to <br /> as a cut. <br /> FILL. Deposition of earth materials by artificial means. <br /> GRADE. The vertical location of the ground surface. <br /> GRADE, EXISTING. The grade prior to grading. <br /> GRADE, FINISHED. The grade of the site at the conclusion of all grading efforts. <br /> GRADING. An excavation, fill, or combination thereof. <br /> KEY. A compacted fill placed in a trench excavated in earth material beneath the <br /> toe of a slope. <br /> SLOPE. An inclined surface, the inclination of which is expressed as a ratio of <br /> horizontal distance to vertical distance. <br /> TERRACE. A relatively level step constructed in the face of a graded slope for <br /> drainage and maintenance purposes. <br /> (Ord. No. 2241, §2, 12-5-2002) <br /> Sec. 9.86. SECTION J103. APPPENDIX J OF THE BUILDING CODED <br /> AMENDED: Section J103, Appendix J of the Building Code is hereby amended to read <br /> as follows: <br /> J103.1 Permits required. Except as exempted in Section J103.2, no engineered <br /> grading shall be performed without first having obtained a permit therefore from <br /> the building official. A grading permit does not include the construction of <br /> retaining walls or other structures. <br /> J103.2 Exemptions. A grading permit shall not be required for the following: <br /> 1. Grading in an isolated, self-contained area, provided there is no danger to the <br /> public, and that such grading will not adversely affect adjoining properties and <br /> the amount of grading is less than 50 cubic yards. <br /> 2.
