Eliminating natural gas in new construction would save costs associated with connecting a <br />service line from the street main to the building, piping distribution within the building, and monthly <br />connection charges by the utility. <br />The Reach Code Team determined that for a new construction building with natural gas piping, there is a <br />service line (branch connection) from the natural gas main to the building meter. In the medium office <br />prototype, natural gas piping is routed to the boiler. The Reach Code Team assumed that the boiler is on <br />the first floor, and that 30 feet of piping is required from the connection to the main to the boiler. The <br />Reach Code Team assumed 1" corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) material is used for the plumbing <br />distribution. The Reach Code Team included costs for a natural gas plan review, service extension, and a <br />gas meter, as shown in Figure 14 below. The natural gas plan review cost is based on information received <br />from the City of Palo Alto Utilities. The meter costs are from PG&E and include both material and labor. <br />The service extension costs are based on guidance from PG&E, who noted that the cost range is highly <br />varied and that there is no "typical" cost, with costs being highly dependent on length of extension, <br />terrain, whether the building is in a developed or undeveloped area, and number of buildings to be <br />served. While an actual service extension cost is highly uncertain, the team believes the costs assumed in <br />this analysis are within a reasonable range based on a sample range of costs provided by PG&E.
