I wanted to
provide feedback related to the city council agenda for Monday because I have a couple of concerns and
alternative suggestions for the Shores.
In consideration of closing streets to vehicle traffic during our shelter -in-place order, including BRIDGE
PARKWAY, input was not sought from the Shores Community, thus the suggested closures do not
account for the fact that Bridge Parkway is 1 of only 3 ways that drivers can connect from Marine
Parkway to Redwood Shores Parkway. Many homes and businesses rely on Bridge Parkway to enter
their properties, and it is also a SamTrans bus route. As there is a contract in the council agenda for
approval to pave Twin Dolphin Drive, another connector road would be unavailable for us. Bridge is the
most central and safest connector given the wide pedestrian walkways on either side. Shell and
Twin Dolphin don't have sidewalks on both sides of the street, and all pedestrians who walk along either
parkway near residential areas, know that with each added stop sign, drivers' behavior worsens and
traffic laws are ignored, so making people drive further into residential areas causes our pedestrian
pathways closer to home to be less safe. Closing Bridge would increase traffic in more residential areas
throughout the Shores and funnel people to an already very unsafe intersection at Shell and Marine
(where cars to not stop for pedestrians). And as Shell is a one lane road rather than two lane, with
narrow sidewalks on only one side of the road, this would actually create more unsafe conditions and
added confusion for all Redwood Shores residents and people making deliveries in Redwood Shores
while we stay safe at home.
As an alternative, it would be quite simple to change the pedestrian path on bridge to allow for social
distancing — one side of the bridge should be used by pedestrians going toward The Marketplace (Nob
Hill shopping center), the other goes toward the Library (same as cars). We'd also note that people
shouldn't walk in the road itself. Bike riders should educate themselves on proper rules of the road and
adhere to all stops and signals. This can be communicated by Redwood Shores Community Association
(RSCA) by email, signboards and next-door.
Please ensure that the bridge stays open for cars. It is a vital path for those who live off Marine to our
closest marketplace. The city should use this time for improvements, like the no left turn signage during
set times on Redwood Shores Parkway for Shoreway and Twin Dolphin Drive that we've been asking
about for over a year.
Finally, on the agenda, there's a plan to support RWC schools, but only in the main part of
RWC. Sandpiper and Redwood Shores Elementary School are not included again. As a resident of
Redwood City who pays fees that go to the Redwood City budget, I expect that ALL community schools
should have the same consideration if city funds are being used.
I have many other notes related to city's intentions to support early education that do NOT include
building additional childcare centers. It's far more efficient for time and expense to utilize systems already
in place rather than recreating something from scratch. Please contact me so I can share more ideas for
this effort.
Thank you for considering.
Shannon Guzzetta
2020-2021 PTA President, Redwood Shores Elementary School
