From: Amy Koo
To: PublicComment
Subject: Opposed to Soft Closure of Bridge Parkway
Date: Friday, April 24, 2020 11:12:56 PM
I walk several times a week across Bridge Parkway between Redwood Shores Pkwy and Marine Pkwy for
exercise, and I would be very much against a soft closure of one lane of Bridge Parkway. It is the main
east -west thoroughfare for cars in Redwood Shores which is why it has 2 lanes each way. Having a soft
closure of Bridge Pkwy will force cars to go onto other east -west thoroughfares that are only one lane
wide. I often walk on Shell parkway as part of the walking circuit and in order to socially distance, I step
out into the bike lane to pass pedestrians. If more cars go down Shell parkway because of the Bridge
Parkway closure, then every time I go into the bike lane to pass a pedestrian, I run the risk of getting hit
by a car. I have only had one close encounter walking across the Bridge where the path is narrow and
there's no way to observe the 6 ft social distance because you can't see the pedestrian coming up the
other side of the bridge until it's too late. Rather than close a lane to cars, we can put signs up that tell
pedestrians to walk in one direction - the same direction that the cars are going, and then you solve that
problem. For Shell parkway, only one side of the street has a sidewalk so it's not possible to have one
way pedestrian walkways. Bridge Parkway has sidewalks / paths on both sides of the street, so one way
walking would be the easy solution.
Amy Koo
amykoo&alum.mit.edu
