8.A. - Page 5 of 7
and the Downtown Business Group, developed and distributed a survey for businesses in the downtown
central businesses district. Survey results will be shared at a future council meeting.
Policy Considerations
(1) Should City staff continue to explore the Downtown street closure program, including the idea of
rotating closures, proposed streets for closure, three-day closure duration and the overall program
period?
(2) Should City staff continue to explore the temporary usage of City public right-of-ways (temporary
parklets program) focused on the downtown area, and should staff further investigate the feasibility
of broadening this area outside of the downtown?
(3) Should City encroachment permit fees be waived for restaurants who would like to conduct outdoor
dining in City public right-of-ways?
(4) Should City staff continue to develop a process that would allow alternative uses of private sidewalks
and private parking lots in the City's business and retail centers for outdoor dining?
Next Steps
Once staff receives Council feedback and direction, City staff plans to further refine plans and appropriate
policies and present the items for formal City Council adoption and approval at either the June 22 or July
13 City Council meeting.
FISCAL IMPACT
It is anticipated there will be a cost for staff time to assist with the implementation of the program. The
scope of the street closures and duration of the program is needed to determine the extent of staff
support and cost.
ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW
This activity is not a project under California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) as defined in CEQA
Guidelines, section 15378, because it has no potential for resulting in either a direct or reasonably
foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment.
PUBLIC NOTICE
Public notification was achieved by posting the agenda, with the agenda items being listed, at least 72
hours prior to the meeting.
City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.ore
545
