CLK-Pamela Aguilar
From: tsole@ecoslip.org
Sent: Monday, August 17, 2020 2:37 PM
To: GRP -City Council
Subject: City Council Special Agenda Meeting Item #5A
Hello Council members and City Staff,
I am shocked that staff would even consider much less recommend "adopting a resolution appointing the
only candidate in City Council District 4, Michael Smith, to the office of Redwood City City Council, District
4, for a term of four years, or proceed with an election in Council District 4."
I strongly support the process that requires the City Clerk to hold a write-in candidate period during which
potential write-in candidates can file nomination documents with the City Clerk. The write-in period would
be from Monday, September 7, 2020 — Tuesday, October 20, 2020. It is in fact precisely because of one
of the reasons given in the staff reports namely the issue of precedent setting.
" Appointing the only individual who has been nominated could be perceived as setting a precedent for the
future. While this might not have the weight of a legal precedent, past City actions are often used to guide
future decisions."
In these times of concern regarding voter suppression, the last thing the City Council members should be
doing is anything to further disenfranchise voters. Even in cases of only one candidate filing, creating a
write-in period requires the first candidate to campaign and explain him or herself to the voters. We need
to be encouraging these type of actions and making sure that they create the precedents that we want in
our city.
It is clear that the actual cost to the city is nominal and should not be considered as a factor against.
I strongly recommend you vote to require a write-in candidate process to proceed.
Sincerely,
Tania Sole
Docktown Resident.
1-415-987-3283
