4.A. - Page rFc
PENINSULA CONFLICT RESOLUTION CENTER
• Immediately - separate crises but housing is tremendously urgent, especially for non-
white, and lower income. Whole Bay Area cost crisis is a problem and important to talk
about.
• Making community better: we need to reform existing policies so that they don't allow
actions that lead to race based decisions. Do not make RWC the next Minneapolis.
• Support children of lower economic background so that they can continue their education
from home. Needed: computers, internet, bodies to watch them at home. Even though
parents are doing their best, they don't have the familiarity to support their children.
How do we support the children? Especially for families with language barrier.
Language barrier is a real big issue if I can't talk to the teacher about issues.
• More transparency - communication, with local government. Transparency - making
things 2 way communications, authentic communication, provide reciprocity, give
responses to questions. Not only the police department needs more transparency. More
education and transparency at all levels. Use Media.
• Jail thing very serious, going to make everything worse -need to be able to see the person
you're visiting, they need to see the "real world"
• Know they're doing community policing, have come a long way, want to see police
officers working with families/not stereotyping/not stopping because of car; like when
officers talk to children, in future treat everybody with respect
• Large undocumented population, afraid of calling police, suggest having critical response
team which doesn't involve police (social workers, counselors), immigrant relief fund
needs more funding
• Police scorecard for each city -require de-escalation, not just train
• Need to do de-escalation training again (if not in the past year) -very important
• Town halls - need more honest looks at history of policing (hear "I know Sheriff so & so
and he's a good guy"
• Community presence volunteers -worked really well in San Mateo, working with PAL,
everybody involved, police in schools engaged the youth (in gangs) like people! built
trust, gang members would call cops or volunteers
• Downtown activities bring people together;
• Looking forward to getting back
• No immediate needs
• Responsive council
• Microaggressions, assumptions at school about race; need to open up about diversity in
school
• Racism concerns me — people getting stopped
• Everyone should be welcome
• Biggest problem: We put the students on the spot by asking which was bigger concern:
Equity in School supplies /racial profiling /white people cut in line (3 items from the
class list)
o 3 votes for racial profiling, 1 for cutting in line
• Comment on police resources: How can community resources be deployed to benefit of
everyone? (Example of white person mentally disturbed — should first responder always
have gun?) Have to figure out how not every first responder has a gun
• Equity for those with disabilities; City does a lot yet can reach out and do more
