Graffiti Abatement - On a daily basis, Paint and Sign staff monitors the graffiti Page 2 <br />homne and frequently make site vtsits to an known "hot spots" to remove this <br />unsightly problem. They make graffiti abatement a top priority to help deter gang <br />activity. This leads to lower crime rates and increases the safety and welfare of <br />Redwood City residents. <br /> <br />3. Staff Development - New state regulatory mandates require the City of Redwood <br />City to develop a Sanitary Sewer Management Plan (SSMP) in compliance with <br />state and federa~ laws to protect water quanty of San Francisco Bay. A major <br />component of maintaining and operating the wastewater systems is ensuring a well- <br />trained, competent workforce. As of January 2008, 16 Wastewater Management <br />Services Division employees have obtained Collection System Maintenance Grade I, <br />II or If( certifications from CWEA (California Water Environment Association); thus <br />meeting the State's requirement for third party validation of the Department's training <br />program. The staff successes were a result of Public Works Services Department's <br />proactive search for the most qualified trainers and course offerings that address <br />statewide waste discharge requirements. <br /> <br />4. Storm and Flood Preparation - In compliance with state and federal regulations, the <br />Storm Drains Maintenance Section performs preventative maintenance in the dry <br />season by cleaning and flushing storm inlets, removing debris from creeks, and <br />keeping all pump stations in working order. All of these tasks reduce the chance of <br />the storm system backing up during heavy rains. <br /> <br /> <br />5. Fleet Inmanves - To combat rising fuel costs, the Fleet Management Dtvision has <br />replaced 75% of the general sedans in Redwood City's Fleet with hybrid vehicles. <br />To comply with the State of California Air Resource Board's Assembly Bitt No. 32 <br />(AB32), diesel particulate matter filters are being installed on trucks over 14,000 Ibs. <br />They have also changed 80% of diesel engine vehicles to utilize bio-diesel.
