<br />REPORT <br /> <br />58 <br />Page 1 <br /> <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the Cit Mana er <br /> <br />March 24,2008 <br /> <br />INFORMATIONAL STAFF REPORT <br /> <br />The Public Works Services Department is responsible for the essential services that <br />help build a great community. The Department consists of four operating divisions and <br />one department management program including Water Utility Services, Wastewater <br />Management Services, Right-Ot-Way Maintenance, Fleet Management, and Water <br />Resources Management. With 92 employees, the department provides effICient, <br />economical, and responsive maintenance to our infrastructure system. <br /> <br />The Department supports the City Council Utilities Committee, Tree Board, and the <br />Redwood City Pride and Beautification Committee in meeting their objectives. To <br />ensure that the water and wastewater systems are continuously maintained and <br />replaced in a timely and effective manner, the Water Utility Services and Wastewater <br />Management Services Divisions support and provide input to the Engineering and <br />Construction Division of the Community Development Services Department for systems <br />long-range planning and capital improvement programs. To maintain the roadways and <br />sidewalks, the Right-Of-Way Maintenance Division utilizes strategic programs such as <br />the Roadway Maintenance System and the Sidewalk Repair Program. These programs <br />prioritize maintenance based upon the condition ot the road or sidewalk. The Fleet <br />Management Division's "core business" is to service and maintain City vehicles and <br />equipment in a safe and sound operating condition and repJace worn, outdated <br />equipment when the economy dictates. Their business also provides vehicle <br />maintenance services to six outside agencies and fueling services to two agencies. <br />Finally, the mission of the Water Resources Management Program is to develop an <br />efficient water use ethic throughout the community by actively promoting wise water use <br />practices. This is completed through public education and awareness initiatives and the <br />active implementation of water conservation "Best Management Practices" (BMPs). <br />The Program implements these initiatives in the most cost effective manner possible~ so <br />to ensure a reliable water supply for our community both today and tomorrow. <br /> <br />FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES <br />. Respond to City Councir, administration, and citizen requests. <br />· Policy development, coordination, and monitoring of divisions within Public Works <br />Services. <br />· ~nfrastructure management and long term plannmg. <br />. Community awareness and public participation programs. <br />· Provide essential services required to sustain a successful community. <br /> <br />2007 NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS <br />1. Recycled Water - The program consists of a new pumping facility, storage facility, <br />and 10 miles of new pipeline; which is about 70% of Phase I of the program. Over <br />34 million gallons of recycled water are delivered to 22 sites located in Redwood <br />Shores. This equates to a net savings of 130,000 gallons of drinking water saved <br />each day for other criticat uses in our community. <br />
