To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />Frqmth~ CI.t, M~n~ e,r <br /> <br />March 24, 2008 <br /> <br />SUBJECT <br />Acceptance of $50,000 Grant from the Morris Stulsaft Foundation <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />By resolution, accept a grant. of $50,000, to support the replacement of the lower restroom <br />facilities in Stulsaft Park, and affirm that funding to complete the project is available in the Fiscal <br />Year 2008-09 Capita! lmprovement Program Budget <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br />Staff of the Morris Stulsaft Foundation approached City staff about assisting with any projects at <br />their foundation namesake's park in Redwood City. Uttimately staff submitted an appltcation for <br />assistance with the next project on the City's Capital Improvement Program schedule, the <br />replacement of the lower restroom. Lower Stulsaft Park is the site for the Department's annual <br />spring and summer Day Camp Programs, which have been operating since 1960. Over the <br />almost fifty years of the program, thousands of Redwood City youth have learned to appreciate <br />the "wilderness" available within their own community. The updated restrooms will serve Day <br />Camp chfldren as wef! as many others who use the park for exercise or sImply communing with <br />nature on a regular basis. The Foundation also made a significant contribution to the renovation <br />of the upper Stulsaft Park Playground completed in March of 2001. <br /> <br />"Fifty Years in the Making, The Story of Redwood City's Parks, 1937-1987", (a booklet written <br />and produced by Oral History Associates, Inc. for the Department's 50th anniversary) describes <br />Morris Stulsaft as a San Francisco Real Estate Developer who was instrumental in the <br />tremendous growth spurt in Redwood City in the 1950's. Mr. Stulsaft donated the 38 acres now <br />known as Stulsaft Park to the City in 1951. <br /> <br />ALTERNATIVES <br />The Council could not accept funding from the Stutsaft Foundation to comptete the project. <br /> <br />FISCAL IMPACT <br />The grant funds must be used in Siulsaft Park and will free up Capital Improvement Program <br />funds for other worthy projects. <br /> <br />~~. <br /> <br />Peter Ingram ~ / <br /> <br />Interim City Manager <br /> <br />Corinne Centeno <br />Parks, Recreation & Community Services Director <br /> <br />ATTACHMENTS <br />t.
