From: Bernadette Garcia
To: GRP -City Council
Subject: RCSD Housing Project for Teachers Agenda #6N
Date: Monday, October 12, 2020 6:54:21 PM
Dear City Council Officers,
I hope this email finds you well. I am a teacher in the Redwood City School District. I am
writing in favor of the Affordable Housing Project for teachers and staff of RCSD.
This year is my 3rd year of teaching in the district. I came from the east coast where apartment
rentals and acquiring real estate properties are affordable. Meaning, a teacher's salary is
enough to pay for my monthly mortgage. Having that said, I do believe that the proposed
housing project will benefit teachers like me to be able to live in an affordable unit with a
sense of community. It would also increase teacher productivity since it will lessen the time of
daily commute to and from school. In addition, teachers will be less exhausted coming to work
without having to deal with the traffic during rush hours.
Having affordable housing in the area will also decrease teacher turnover or increase retention.
Families are moving out of the area and the main reason is the costly rent of apartments and
real estate properties. I love my job in RCSD. I enjoy teaching and I feel connected with my
students' families. I love the school and the department that I am in. My daughter also goes to
school in the district. I am happy in RCSD and I do not want to leave the district just because I
cannot afford the cost of living.
I hope that you can move forward and approve the affordable housing project for teachers.
Sincerely,
Bernadette
