6.G. - Page 1 of 8
/<ik
Redwood
CitylCallifornia
Faunded 1867
A,&/
DATE: October 26, 2020
SUBJECT
STAFF REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
Amendment No. 1 to Zoppe Circus Live Performance Agreement
RECOMMENDATION
From the City Manager
By motion, approve and authorize the City Manager to execute the Zoppe Circus Live Performance
Agreement Amendment between the City of Redwood City and Zoppe Circus in an amount not to exceed
$121,500 for a total not -to -exceed amount of $283,000.
STRATEGIC PLAN GUIDING PRINCIPLE
Communication and Community Building
BACKGROUND
For 2020, and during the COVID-19 health protocols, the Parks, Recreation and Community Services
Department partnered with the Port of Redwood City to produce the annual Zoppe Circus live
performances as a drive-in event instead of the traditional seated event in their tent. The original
agreement was for a four week run. The change in performance venue and style of the show raised some
initial concerns about the attendee experience, however, staff worked closely with the Zoppe Circus to
ensure an enjoyable event for everyone, and the feedback has been exceptional. In August, the City
entered into a one-year Memorandum of Understanding with the Port to program community
entertainment options using their large parking lot. Opportunities began with drive-in movies (which staff
will return to periodically) and transitioned to the Zoppe Circus in October.
Staff have explored opportunities for other types of family programming. Discussions have been ongoing
with various agents/performers. Unfortunately, the cost for those endeavors appears cost prohibitive due
to the financial commitment to the performers and the impact of wet weather requiring cancellation.
City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.ore
152
