October 24, 2020
Letter to Redwood City, City Council and City Manager,
I read an article in Saturday's Daily Journal that the proposed revised budget for 2020/2021
would not include the funding of the operation of Engine 9 operating out of the main fire
station on Marshal St. This is a major mistake in defunding Engine 9.
In the fire service the ENGINE is the workhorse and primary apparatus within the department.
It responds to all types of 911 calls:
FIRE
MEDICAL
AUTO ACCIDENTS and many other needs that fall to the fire department.
2/3 of the calls for fire services is medical.
Engine 9 being downtown is the busiest of the engine companies in the city and I am told it is
the busiest in San Mateo Co.
Are you going to send Truck 9, the aerial apparatus to medical calls. A misuse of specialized
equipment.
The Daily Journal article quoted Mgr. Diaz or it was Chief Pucci who said "Average response
time in District 9 will increase by 6 seconds overall with the brownout of Engine 9." This 6
seconds can't be right. Someone made an error.
Council, you need to find $2 million somewhere else that is not an essential service to the
community. Life safety comes first ahead of the Library or Parks and Recreation Departments.
Sincerely,
Emile Bourdet
Redwood City, CA 94062
